What I'm Reading

STORIES I’VE READ AND ENJOYED THIS MONTH

As profiled in my newsletter.

July 2020

He’s Come Undone

EMMA BARRY, OLIVIA DADE, ADRIANA HERRERA, RUBY LANG, CAT SEBASTIAN

For him, control is everything...until it shatters, and now he's come undone.

I pre-ordered this anthology of romance stories because it has two of my favorite authors in it--Adriana Herrera and Cat Sebastian--and finished it last week. The tag line for the anthology fits each story in unique ways and the whole thing was delightful. Highly recommend!

The Glass Hotel

EMILY ST. JOHN MANDEL

Okay, not a romance, this one (definitely not a romance!) but I've read Station Eleven by the same author and this book was this month's selection for WNYC's Get Lit with All of It book club. I read it aloud to my wife (and my dog Giles, who really loves being read to) and it was...well, interesting. I'm not entirely satisfied with the way it ends but two minor characters in this book have an alternate life in Station Eleven and that was kind of neat. I'd totally live in the hotel that's featured in it.

A Gentleman Never Keeps Score

CAT SEBASTIAN

Hartley Sedgwick has become a recluse after a spate of salacious gossip exposed his private secrets. Rarely venturing from the house whose inheritance is a daily reminder of his downfall, he’s captivated by the exceedingly handsome retired boxer Sam Fox. Sam's turned his pub into a haven for those in London's Free Black community and needs Hartley's help to protect a good friend's reputation.

So far, I'm very much enjoying this one, but it's Cat Sebastian, so of course I am.

His Royal Favorite

LILAH PACE

Book 2 (and the conclusion) of a contemporary story about a gay Prince of Wales and the loner journalist who falls for him but isn't quite sure he's ready to be a Royal Consort. I liked the first book in this duology, so I snapped this up when it was on pre-order.

There's a lot of 'will he stay, will he go?' angst in this one and less of the steamy sexy bits that I prefer, but I really like the characters and they feel very real, so I'm glad I got their closure.
