What I'm Reading

STORIES I’VE READ AND ENJOYED THIS MONTH

As profiled in my newsletter.

November 2019

Love Around the Corner

SALLY MALCOLM

Love Around the Corner is described as basically You've Got Mail, only gay. I'm not usually into Christmas romances and I might be the last person on earth who's never actually seen You've Got Mail, but this book also has a prickly bookshop owner, a cinnamon roll mechanic, an online relationship between two men who didn't realize they're actually enemies in real life, and well, you had me at "cinnamon roll mechanic." So far, it's delightful and sweet, but not so sweet my teeth are on edge.

Heartsong

TJ KLUNE

I recently finished TJ's Klune's Heartsong and it nearly broke me. I love this series about a pack of werewolves and the witches and humans that belong to them. One of the main characters is asexual so there's not as much sex as I usually like to see, but I'm deeply invested in these characters and I don't know how I'm going to be able to wait for the last installment, Brothersong, which doesn't come out until August 2020.

A Light Amongst Shadows

KELLEY YORK AND ROWAN ALTWOOD

A queer historical ghost story set in a school for boys whose parents find them something of an inconvenience that I thoroughly enjoyed. It's deliciously creepy and I'm a sucker for a good gothic romance. All the better if it's gay.

Unscripted

J.R. GRAY

Unscripted is about costars filming a new television show based on a popular book series about a bisexual pirate and a gay prince. It's a contemporary romance and had me at bisexual pirate and tv actors falling in love with each other. There were parts of it I really enjoyed and I loved the characters. It could have used a stronger editing hand, though, which is a little disappointing because the premise and the basic storyline is so good.
