Eight ArmsREADING ROOM

What I'm watching

The West Wing

September 26, 2026

So, I’ve been upping my strength-training game because I am a 50-something year old woman and gaining muscle and preventing bone loss is pretty much the most important thing I need to be doing rn. But bicep curls, goblet squats, and split squats are about the most boring-ass things I can think of doing, and I had an epiphany that a tv episode is about 40-ish minutes and it takes me about 40-ish minutes to do my series of three reps of ten exercises.

When I’m in Maine, I put a Supernatural disc in the DVD player in the living room but I was in Brooklyn last week and we have a little gym in our apartment building so I opened the Netflix app on my phone. Netflix lost its Supernatural license and I need something that I don’t have to pay super-close attention to.

Hence, The West Wing. Which I watched when it aired live and…I gotta say…it doesn’t hold up as much as one would hope. It’s sexist AF and somehow, we didn’t realize this in the early 2000s when it was on the air. But it’s still kind of a comfort watch for me, despite that, usually when I’m home sick, and I apparently was at the end of season 4 when last I watched it.

When Zoe Bartlett gets kidnapped and President Bartlett invokes the 25th Amendment but there’s currently no Vice President, so the next in line constitutionally-speaking is the Speaker of the House, who’s a big, loud-mouthed Texan Republican played by John Goodman.

Great choice to do my weight-lifting to.
