Intro

One of the perks of being a member of the Eight Arms Reading Room is annotated read-alongs of some of my books. We're currently in the middle of the annotated read-along of Devilfish, book 1 of my Octopian Shifters series.

I started writing this book in early 2018 and published it on October 30, 2019. The original Scrivener file for this book is 360 megabytes (Scrivener is the writing program I use) and has a "cutting room floor" folder that has over 68,000 words--about 75% of the word count for the final book.

The thought of sifting through all this material and reconstructing how I wrote this book and where I got my inspiration has been a little...daunting, to say the least. I post:

  • The full text of each chapter, which will be identical to the published version, except it will have numbered end note markers. The number of notes per chapter vary, depending on how much I have to say about how I wrote them.
  • A separate post for the end notes, to keep the reading experience simple, but it'll be fairly easy to switch between the chapter text and the end notes.
  • An author's note with inspiration images and overall impressions.

I try to post a new chapter every other week or so, though Devilfish is a fair bit longer than the first book I annotated, Hard Chrome, and life and other things sometimes get in the way of my regular schedule.

You can read the annotated version of Chapter 1 to see how this goes.

Can Declan's love anchor Elliot in the maelstrom of discovering his true nature?

Somewhere, out in the vast expanse of the Pacific, something tugs at Elliot. He feels its call in his blood and his bones, an insistent, inexorable siren's song tied to the moon, the tides, and the giant octopus from his childhood nightmares.

When the safe life Elliot's built on land shatters a second time, Declan is there to pick up the pieces again. Declan offers his ship, his crew, and his body to protect Elliot while they uncover Elliot's connection to strange creatures in the ocean's depths, even as doing so reignites their feelings for each other.

Embark on a high seas voyage where Victorian propriety dissolves into a tidal rush of passion and mystery.
