Canadian Maritimes Road Trip: Bay of Fundy

A couple of years ago, my wife and I took the dog on a road trip to see the total solar eclipse. This year, we decided on a road trip to the Canadian maritime provinces. (We’re already planning a second road trip over more days and adding Newfoundland next time.)

Day 1 was the Bay of Fundy. It’s a six+ hour drive from our house in Maine and we missed the low tide mark but the water was still pretty far out so we got a small sense of how huge the tidal range is. Our Maine village has a tidal range of 10-13 feet but that’s nothing compare to the 50-foot difference in high and low tides in the Bay of Fundy.

It’s really hard to convey the sense of how far out the sea is. And, again, it’s about two hours past low tide here.

It’s so cool to see the patterns the waves make on the ocean floor.

Then we went to Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park.

By now, we’re, like, three hours out from low tide, but still impressive.

When the tide is in, that arch is almost completely filled with water.

Park rangers have shooed everyone away from this section because it’s about to be underwater.

We’ve got about 45 minutes before everyone has to go back up those stairs.
