What I'm reading
Alias Grace - Margaret Atwood

I read this for one of my libraries’ book club. It’s based on a true story about Grace Marks, a servant girl convicted in 1843 at age sixteen for her involvement in the murders of her employer and his mistress. From the blurb: The narrative explores the ambiguity around Grace's culpability—whether she was innocent, evil, insane, or a victim—as Dr. Simon Jordan, an expert in mental illness, attempts to recover her memories.
I liked how it ended and the subplot with Simon Jordan and his landlady was entertaining (also a total parallel to Grace’s story, which he didn’t seem to notice ever, which I’m not sure was purposeful) but the book dragged a fair bit in the middle. More Spiritualism and a little less dwelling on Grace’s life in Mr. Kinnear’s household might have tightened it up a bit, especially since she seemed to live there for, what, like less than a year, it seems?
Did I like it? Eh, mostly. Might not have finished it if it weren’t for the book club meeting, though.
Tomorrow evening is the book club meeting. It’ll be interesting to see what everyone thought about it.
