What I'm reading
Killers of a Certain Age
Okay, this book is not a romance and has no on-page sex in it, but it is one of the most delightful, hilarious books I've read in a long time. It's...like, the Golden Girls crossed with Onley James's Necessary Evils series with a dash of Kill Bill. Except--again--no sex, and no gay sexy serial killer siblings. Well, one of the characters is a lesbian and her wife is as attached to their cat as Noah Mulvaney is the dog he insists Adam rescues from a job, but I'm trying not to overstate the comps here.
Four women of a certain age, who've had long careers as assassins for a secretive, extra-governmental organization called the Museum, that was formed after World War II to track down the remaining Nazis in hiding and recover stolen artwork and gradually moves more into taking out dictators, drug lords, human traffickers, and other bad, bad people.
The women are on a luxurious, all-expense-paid cruise to celebrate their retirement, when it becomes clear that the Museum has sent an agent to kill them. But why? And why after their long, successful careers and all the jobs they've done for the Museum?
The book goes back and forth in time between the present (when they're trying to stay alive and figure out why the Museum is trying to take them out) and past jobs they've had, how they got involved with the Museum in the first place, and how everything built up to the situation they're in now.
It's snarky and hilarious at various points and I read it (out loud to my wife and the dog) over two long car rides between NYC and Maine. It's not my usual, but I loved it.
