Spent by Alison Bechdel

When I was in law school, I picked up the local LGBTQ biweekly newspaper to read the comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For. I bought the books when enough strips were collected to publish them that way. I even got one of those books signed when Alison Bechdel came to the gay bookstore in Washington, DC while I was living there.

Then I read her graphic memoirs, Fun Home and Are You My Mother?

Plus, I reference the Bechdel test all the time and mostly only watch tv and movies that meet the test.

Suffice to say, I'm a fan of this author and her work. Though I hadn't actually known this new book was out until a friend sent it to my wife to read while she recovered from some minor surgery. Luckily, her recovery was quick and so was her reading of the book, so I got to read it a few days later.

It's hilarious. And very meta—it's about a character named Alison writing this book—but it also has a lot of the characters from the old Dykes to Watch Out For comics and it's delightful to see how they've grown and changed (and not changed).

It took me a day and a half to finish it and my only regret is that I can't read it for the first time again.
